“Design is not how it looks like, but how it works”
I have heard this misquoted argument many times.
Often to justify poor aesthetics.
And I don’t completely agree. Here’s why:
Of course, the design has to be functional.
It has to serve a purpose.
It has to
👉 get someone to complete a task
👉 or increase some metrics
👉 or change some behaviour
(among other things)
But when you choose to make something that’s just functional, you are setting the bar too low.
You are looking at creating something that is incomplete.
A great piece of design combines aesthetics & function.
A great piece of design shows clarity of thinking, all the way through.
It delivers on form & functionality.
